Goodbye Guangzhou

Beste BenCham vrienden,

Na drie jaar Guangzhou sta ik nu op het punt te vertrekken. Voorlopig eerst naar Nederland, wie weet daarna weer naar een andere bestemming. Het is onmogelijk om terug te kijken op de afgelopen drie jaar zonder COVID te noemen. Een leven zonder health codes, mondkapjes, PCR-testen en quarantaine – het is bijna niet meer voor te stellen.  Na een vliegende start na mijn aankomst in augustus 2019 moesten ook wij op het consulaat heel snel het roer omgooien. Geen reizigers, geen visa, geen handelsmissies – kortom: het normale werk stopte. Reizen naar Nederland werd heel moeilijk en voor velen van ons zelfs bijna onmogelijk.

Toch kijk ik terug op een enorm interessante en boeiende periode in dit fascinerende land. COVID was een spelbreker – maar er zijn ook lichtpuntjes. De handel tussen China en Nederland is verder gegroeid en de Chinese investeringen in Nederland zitten in de lift. Sectoren als offshore wind, waterstof en creatieve industrie bieden volop kansen voor Nederlandse bedrijven. Als Consulaat proberen we daar een steentje aan bij te dragen. Ook de BenCham heeft hier een nuttige rol – als netwerk van professionals die Nederlandse (en Belgische) bedrijven wegwijs kunnen maken in de Pearl River Delta en als een mooi voorbeeld van Belgisch-Nederlandse samenwerking in Zuid-China. Daar zit muziek in voor de toekomst.

Dear friends of the BenCham,

After three years in Guangzhou I am now about to leave, first to the Netherlands and who knows after that to another destination. It's impossible to look back on the past three years without mentioning covid. A life without health codes, face masks, PCR tests and quarantine is almost impossible to imagine. After a flying start in August 2019 we also had to change course suddenly at the consulate. No travelers, no visas, no trade missions – in short, normal work stopped. Traveling to the Netherlands became very difficult and for many of us almost impossible. Nevertheless, I look back on a very interesting period in this fascinating country. Covid was a setback – but there are also sparkles of light. Trade between China and the Netherlands has continued to grow and Chinese investments in the Netherlands are on the rise. Sectors such as offshore wind, hydrogen and the creative industry offer plenty of opportunities for Dutch companies. As Consulate we try to contribute to this. The BenCham also has a useful role here – as a network of professionals who can guide Dutch (and Belgian) companies in the Pearl River Delta and as a good example of Belgian-Dutch cooperation in South China. I am sure that the BenCham has a bright future.
